Peugeot 205 Mi16 Standalone ECU (MaxxECU) for Taylor Made Cars
We recently had Taylor Hetherington from Taylor Made Cars on YouTube drop off his Peugeot 205 Mi16 for a comprehensive standalone ECU upgrade. The car came to us with several ongoing wiring issues and difficulties running its individual throttle bodies (ITBs) reliably on the existing piggy-back ECU setup / stock ecu setup. It ran the original wiring loom that had corroded massively as most older french wiring does, with a second loom tapped into it for the piggy back ecu.
Taylor’s Peugeot 205 Mi16 was experiencing common yet frustrating problems such as fouling spark plugs, inconsistent starting, and unexpected cut-outs. These issues often plague classic cars with aging wiring and outdated electronics, so a significant aspect of this project was improving overall reliability.
Why a MaxxECU Street Was the Ideal Standalone ECU Replacement
For this particular “Peugeot 205 Mi16 standalone ECU replacement,” we chose the MaxxECU Street. Its compact size, powerful built-in features, and affordability made it the perfect solution. With the MaxxECU Street, Taylor now benefits from modern ECU technology featuring built-in lambda control, intuitive tuning software, and advanced reliability features—all at a very competitive price point. Compared to older ECU alternatives on the market, the MaxxECU Street provides a significant leap forward in terms of modern functionality, intuitive interface, and reliability, helping to overcome common issues associated with dated technology.
Custom Wiring Loom & Fusebox Integration
We began by removing the existing piggy-back and factory ECU setups along with their problematic wiring harnesses. Next, we carefully reverse-engineered the original ECU pinouts, ensuring that essential body control functions remained intact.
A fully bespoke wiring loom was engineered and built in-house, incorporating compact fuseboxes designed to neatly fit in the stock location under the dash. These fuseboxes accommodate up to 4 relays and 4 fuses each, perfectly suited to control critical functions such as injectors, ignition coils, fans, and fuel pumps. Being waterproof and compact, they seamlessly integrate into the OEM space, enhancing reliability without sacrificing aesthetics.
Distributor Delete & Wasted Spark Coil Upgrade
The original distributor and coil setup posed several challenges. Most aftermarket solutions would interfere with the power steering pulley driven off the exhaust camshaft. Additionally, standard distributor delete kits often leave the camshaft exposed, creating a potential dirt and moisture ingress point.
We designed a custom distributor delete kit that also neatly mounts our chosen wasted-spark coilpack, preserving a clean “OEM+” look. Custom HT leads were fabricated, ensuring optimal performance. This configuration solved clearance and sealing issues.
ITB Calibration & ECU Configuration
After finishing the loom construction and carefully installing the ECU, we calibrated the throttle position sensor, synchronized the ITBs, and established accurate crank trigger settings. We also installed and configured the lambda sensor directly into the MaxxECU for precise AFR monitoring.
The advanced internal logic functions of the MaxxECU allowed us to implement intelligent control of cooling fans and other engine management outputs, significantly improving operating efficiency and engine protection.
First Start & Final Mechanical Touches
When the time came for the first start-up, the Peugeot fired instantly—a testament to the thoroughness of the installation and initial ECU setup. However, some additional mechanical issues needed attention for peak reliability.
We upgraded the fuel pump, designing a custom sleeve to ensure it fit securely within the original housing. Due to space limitations, mounting a new fuel pressure regulator proved challenging. To solve this, we 3D-scanned the inner wing area and fabricated a tailored bracket for the regulator, neatly integrating it into the limited available space.
All fuel lines were upgraded to modern, ethanol-resistant bio-fuel hoses, future-proofing the fuel system against modern fuels.
Results
We’ve developed this conversion into a complete kit and are now offering a full installation service, making it even easier for Peugeot 205 Mi16 enthusiasts to achieve modern reliability and performance.
The finished project transformed Taylor’s Peugeot 205 Mi16, eliminating previous reliability concerns entirely. The car now starts perfectly, idles consistently, and runs smoothly through the entire rev range.
If you’re looking for a robust and reliable Peugeot 205 Mi16 standalone ECU our MaxxECU Street based solution is ideal, delivering seamless performance, modern reliability, and precise tuning capabilities.
