BMW E21 MaxxECU Street Install, Custom Loom & Trigger Kit Development at ASD Tuning
When this immaculately kept BMW E21 rolled into the ASD Tuning workshop, we knew it deserved more than a routine upgrade. It was the perfect platform to showcase our capabilities and push the boundaries of what modern ECU tech can do for classic engines.
The owner wanted to bring this iconic 3-Series into the 21st century without losing its character. The engine was already equipped with a set of individual throttle bodies (ITBs), making it an exciting candidate for a standalone ECU setup that could take full advantage of the improved airflow and response. We knew that meant giving it a modern brain—so we turned to the MaxxECU Street. It’s our go-to for classic conversions because of its flexibility, reliability, and full control over ignition, fuelling, and more.
With the ECU choice made, we got to work fabricating a completely bespoke wiring loom. Every wire was routed and labelled by hand in our workshop to ensure reliability, future serviceability, and a clean OEM+ finish. The components used—connectors, sensors, and sheathing—are all available from our connectors & wiring accessories section for anyone building or upgrading their own loom.
But the heart of the install came when we tackled the ignition and crank signal. These engines were never built with standalone ECUs in mind, so we engineered a solution from scratch: a custom trigger kit designed and machined in-house specifically for the BMW E21. To complete the ignition system, we fitted one of our 6-cylinder coilpacks, mounted neatly and paired with custom HT leads we built in-house. This setup delivers a powerful, consistent spark—ideal for high-compression or forced induction builds down the line.
